Delray Beach retirement community damaged, but safe – including a dog

The Kings Point retirement community was evacuated Thursday night as a fire broke out in a second-floor unit of the complex. Residents were sent to the clubhouse once the fire was reported around 9 p.m. on Dec. 14.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue crews took to the building’s roof in attempt to ventilate the condo located in the 70 block of Capri B, since the fire had penetrated the attic.

Firefighters on the scene were informed of a missing dog. In addition to securing the fire, they located and rescued the canine from a back bedroom in one of the units, which made for grateful reunion between owner and pet.

Officials confirmed that by midnight, the fire and all hot spots were fully extinguished. Most residents were allowed to return to their homes, but 5 units sustained damage from water, smoke, and fire.

The Red Cross was called to provide temporary help with six displaced residents and one family pet.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
