Luis Fonsi’s boundary-crossing smash hit song “Despacito (Featuring Daddy Yankee)” already held the title of most viewed YouTube video when it reached 3 billion views back in August 2017. What the tune has done since that time is even more astounding; the Puerto Rican sensation has crushed its own record by scoring more than 5 billion YouTube views.
The infectious melody has ties to South Florida – Luis Fonsi wrote the song with acclaimed composer and Miami resident Erika Ender.
Never in the 13-year history of YouTube has another video come close to “Despacito’s” numbers. Only 19 music videos have surpassed the 2 billion mark. The second most popular song is Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s “See You Again” with a mere 3.5 billion views. Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” is a close third with more than 3.4 billion.
“Despacito’s” impact appears to be long-reaching. In fact, the wild popularity of the music video is credited with an uptick in interest in visiting Puerto Rico. According to data from Hotels.com, once the song released in April 2017, searches for Puerto Rico spiked 45 percent when compared to the same time in 2016.
