A Florida mall was evacuated shortly before closing on Sunday night after two explosive devices detonated. There were no injures reported in the incident.
The devices went off near the entrance of a J.C. Penney store at the Eagle Ridge Mall in Lake Wales, Florida. Firefighters also discovered a backpack in the area that they believe contained additional explosive devices, as reported by local news outlets.
The Lake Wales Police Department responded to a report of fire at the mall at 5:22 p.m. They soon found the improvised explosive devices which led to an investigation of who might be responsible.
Officials released photos of a person of interest. The description is a “heavy-set, middle-aged white male wearing a gray shirt and a gray hat,” WESH2 reports.
Approximately 100 people were at the mall when the explosions occurred. The mall was evacuated immediately.
Police have not yet determined a motive for the incident.
Lake Wales Police Department Deputy Chief Troy Schulze told reporters, “There is nothing at this time to indicate this act was terrorism.” He continued by adding, “At this time, we are checking video surveillance cameras. We don’t know what the person was trying to achieve.”
