Four young men were ejected from a car likely travelling at a high rate of speed when it crashed into a toll plaza on the Florida Turnpike north of Commercial Boulevard near McNabb Road in North Lauderdale at around 2:30 AM.
The car went airborne and launched over the toll plaza, taking down an air conditioning unit on top of the plaza, sending it crashing to the ground.
Four people were ejected from the vehicle; two were killed instantly according to officers on the scene. Two others were seriously injured and transported to Broward Health North hospital in critical condition.
The victims’ names have not yet been released and the investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing. Police at the overnight scene say that speed was definitely a factor.
The toll plaza sustained damage which will keep some northbound lanes closed through much of the morning. The SunPass lanes reopened shortly after 7:00 AM.
