Democratic Florida Representative, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz is reporting via a spokesperson that she fired employee Imran Awan. The statement reveals that the termination occurred one day after Awan’s arrest.
The former employee was detained outside of Washington D.C. at the Dulles International airport. Sources confirm that Awan was attempting to leave the U.S. and board a flight to Lahore, Pakistan.
Awan faces charges of bank fraud that stem from allegations that he and others double charged the House of Representatives for IT equipment.
The family of Imran Awan has reportedly worked for the House Democrats for years, and estimates suggest they have made millions of dollars from the relationship.
Debbie Wasserman-Schultz is the former chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee. She resigned in June 2016 amidst controversies over Hillary Clinton’s email scandal.
Wasserman-Schultz’s spokesperson said that Imran Awan was a part time employee.
