Michael “Mikey” Arana, longtime personal security guard for Justin Bieber, was arrested and charged with DUI in connection to a Thursday morning crash that injured two Miami-Dade police officers.
Officials say the crash happened at about 2:30 a.m. on Kendall drive and Southwest 152nd Avenue.
Reportedly, a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Arana, 32, was traveling at a high rate of speed when it rear-ended the police vehicle. Both officers inside the car were injured, with a field training officer who was in the passenger seat requiring an airlift to a nearby hospital. The officer in the driver’s seat, a rookie, was also transported to an area hospital. Both officers have since been released.
The impact caused heavy damage to the rear of the police car, but the driver of the Tahoe continued driving, leaving the scene.
Police were able to catch up with the SUV a few blocks away. When stopped, Arana presented with blood on his lips, glassy eyes, and the scent of alcohol.
Police asked Arana if he had been drinking. The head of Bieber’s security team then answered, “Yes, Sir.” Receipts for drink purchases made the same morning were recovered from Arana’s pockets.
Arana refused to give a blood sample, when police requested.
Documents indicate the pop star’s bodyguard was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center at 7:35 a.m Thursday morning.
He is facing charges of DUI, DUI causing property damage or injury, and fleeing the scene of an accident.
Arana was seen at the side of Justin Bieber when the performer was arrested in Miami Beach in 2014.
There is no information about Bieber’s reaction to the accident or the arrest.
