Miami Swim Week: Beachwear merges with Ready-to-Wear

Miami Swim Week Logo

Miami Swim Week is the preeminent destination for swimwear makers and designers. Each July, Miami is drowning in models, stylists, buyers, and press as the week’s events get bigger, better, and even more glamorous.

The unmatchable draw of Miami Swim Week brings celbrities and social media influencers along for the voyage. This year we noticed Christina Milian, Leighton Meester, and former model Tyson Beckford. Always around for a splash of fun, are reality show regulars like Eva Marcille from “America’s Next Top Model” and Erica Mena from “Love and Hip Hop”.

The non-stop events of the week include fashion shows featuring new and upcoming trends. One of the biggest trends we noted for the 2018-2019 season is swimwear merging with ready-to-wear.

Bohemian prints, tassels, off-shoulder, and scuba-inspired looks were some of our favorites. Suits featuring sleeves in swaths of sheer fabrics really caught our eye. Think of street-wear/beachwear. It’s a match made in lazy-day heaven! We can dream of getting casually dressed and taking a spontaneous dip or basking along the beach. Yummy!

The innovative new materials made from sustainable plants like cassava root made us smile. While the sleek designs confirmed that some are moving away from the overly-decorated compositions. We love that some clever designers are using reversible prints and separates.

Luxe, Luxe, Luxe! Ah yes, the glam is here to stay, but this time it’s a bit more refined, though we did notice some ooh-shiny objects making waves at a couple of presentations.

One trend we’re not completely sure about? The high-high-cut leg. When we witnessed the thong cuts coupled with leg openings jutting well above the hip bone, we weren’t completely sure if the two should continue to see each other.

Best in show? The appearance of “real” models. We loved seeing mermaids of all shapes strutting proudly down the catwalk for an authentic Miami Swim Week.
