NYC Police Officer SHOT and KILLED, Gunman Dead

Miosotis Familia, a 12-year veteran of the New York City police force, was nearing the end of her shift. She was sitting with her partner in their mobile command unit on July 5 at about 12:30.

Police say Familia was shot in the head when a gunman fired through the window of the truck-size unit located in the Fordham Heights neighborhood of the Bronx borough.

Familia, 48, was rushed to Saint Barnabus Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

The assailant fled the scene on foot as officers pursued. He then drew a revolver which prompted police to shoot and kill him.

Police Commissioner James O’Neill said, “It is clear that this was an unprovoked direct attack on police officers who were assigned to keep the people of this city safe.”

According to the police, a second shooting victim, a bystander, was also shot. The injured party was taken to a hospital and was listed in stable condition.

The gunman has been identified as Alexander Bonds, 34. He also uses the name John Bonds.

Bonds was paroled in May 2013 after serving seven years in prison for his part in a Syracuse robbery.

A police spokesperson said that there was no evidence that Bonds knew Familia.

Chief Wilcox, when asked about the characterization of the event, said that “Everything is pointing to” this being viewed as an assassination.

Neighbors in the Fordham Heights area say they didn’t notice the gunshots at first, thinking they were fireworks. The shootings happened at the end of the national holiday. Only minutes later, they say, the area was flooded with police vehicles.

Many residents left immediately, some remained and were later questioned about what they may have seen. Bonds’ girlfriend, who neighbors claim lived in a second-story apartment with Bonds for the past 5 months, was also taken in for questioning.

Throughout the United States, there has been a 20 percent increase in the number of law enforcement officers killed by gunfire. So far, in 2017, there have been 24 fallen officers due to gun violence. Officer Familia is the eighth New York City police officer shot and killed in the line of duty since 2012.
