Palm Beach County officials say a 60-year-old woman was the target of a random chainsaw attack on Tuesday. The woman was walking in front of a Super 8 motel on Hypoluxo Road in Lantana when the sudden act of violence began.
As she walked, the woman noticed a man with a chainsaw and believed he was a landscaper. The suspect, Juan Carlos Cabrera Jr., 20, lunged at the woman and tackled her to the ground. He started up the chainsaw and began slashing her in the chest.
When she tried to flee, the chainsaw cut her hands.
Lantana Police Chief Sean Scheller says the man made a confession and they do not believe there is any connection between the suspect and the woman he attacked.
“He has confessed to the investigator and actually made a comment that he woke up this morning got something to eat. And I can’t confirm or deny if he has any kind of mental illness or not. But he did make a comment to the investigator that he saw the lady in the area and stated ‘I am going to end this woman’s life,’”
The woman survived the violent attack, was transported to a hospital, has required surgery, and is now recovering from her injuries.
Lantana Police arrested Juan Carlos Cabrera, Jr. of Lake Worth, who remained by his vehicle in the Super 8 parking lot. According to reports, the suspect was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail Tuesday evening on multiple charges including attempted first-degree murder, possession of cocaine, and attack on a police officer.
Cabrera told police he suffered a mental breakdown that morning before the attack. The police report states that the suspect claims he has a history of mental illness.
A report released publicly on Wednesday, said Cabrera attacked a Lantana law enforcement officer while he was in a holding cell at the town police station. The record states Cabrera began punching the officer in the head and striking him with a handle he tore off of a door.
Cabrera was tasered by another officer in order to be subdued and placed into handcuffs.
Cabrera was denied bond and remains in custody at the Palm Beach County Jail.
