President Donald Trump spent the Presidents’ Day weekend at his Palm Beach resort, Mar-a-Lago. While he did eventually manage to spend time on the Trump International Golf Course, he and First Lady Melania Trump began their South Florida trip by paying an unexpected visit to some of the survivors of the Parkland school shooting.
The two met with students and families from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School at Broward Health Medical Center, one of the 10 largest public healthcare systems in the nation, in Fort Lauderdale.
Following the hospital visit on Friday, much of the weekend was overshadowed by the President’s tweets regarding Russian collusion.
The U.S. leader released at least 20 tweets over the extended weekend. Most of them pertained to collusion, however; he also touched on the topic of facing Oprah Winfrey in a 2020 presidential race.
On Sunday, Trump met with House Speaker Paul Ryan. The White House released this statement regarding the meeting:
“President Donald J. Trump and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan had a productive meeting today. The two leaders discussed a wide variety of topics, including securing our Nation’s borders through immigration reform, the continued benefits the American people are experiencing as a result of tax reform, the overwhelming need to improve our Nation’s infrastructure, and the recent tragedy in Parkland, Florida. The President looks forward to continuing his close collaboration with Speaker Ryan as they work to accomplish their shared legislative priorities this year.”
Shortly after 4 p.m. on Monday, the President’s motorcade departed Mar-a-Lago for Palm Beach International Airport.
On the President’s schedule for this week is a meeting on Wednesday with students and teachers from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. There is no word yet on when and where the event will take place or as to whom will be invited to the meeting.
